These individuals are dance competitors who were performing in the RedHawk Arts Council Pow-wow at Bear Mountain, New York. The clothing and accessories have been created through traditional methods by each artisan.
During the summer months many Native American families travel around the US from one dance competition to another. Pow-wows are a way to disseminate knowledge and experience as well as a way to connect different tribes. "They are the Native American people’s way of meeting together, to join in dancing, singing, and a renewing friendships, in order to preserve the rich heritage of American Indians."
This portfolio was deeply inspired by a book recently published called "An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States" by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz.
